We headed for Drysdale River Station. Up the Kalumburu road we went. The road condition was the worst we have experienced in our time of travelling. We only had 58 Klms to do however it took us 3 hours of not stop corrugations. At times we had to drive less than 10kmph. We arrived at the station and found ourselves a decent spot. $36 for an unpowered site. You can also fill up your water tanks here too. They have a bar with roast dinner meals most nights and they sell lunches and snacks during the day. We spent 3 nights here and in between our stay we did a day trip up to Mitchell Falls.

We left for Mitchell Falls at 03:30am and arrived at 7:30am. As you can probably guess the road conditions were rough! We commenced our walk straight away as we had 8.6klms to get through. We decided to walk there and back as opting for a helicopter flight would have costed us $500 one way for a 6 minute flight. The walk was unreal it was so different from all the other gorges we have done. It was tropical and green in some parts and yet rugged and dry in others. There were flowering water Lilly’s in one pool. Once we reached the very top it was honestly the best scenery you could ever come across. It actually bought a tear to my eye it was that beautiful!

The next day we left Drysdale and headed for Ellenbrae Station. On our way to Ellenbrae we heard a call for help over the uhf. It was a couple travelling in an Isuzu mux towing a camper. Once we reached them they were after some help with there Mux. One of there wheels were in the bush as all of the wheel nuts and 2 wheel nut studs had come off. The couple were stressed and were wanting a sat phone to call a tow truck, but Lyndon offered to save them some money and time by putting there wheel back on by using some wheel nuts from there other wheels.

Long and behold we were off again and arrived at Ellenbrae station. We ended up staying 5 nights here, we weren’t planning on it but we loved it that much! It’s $35 for a couple for the first night and each night after that it’s $20. They have 2 campgrounds we stayed at “Ringers camp” which was beautiful, they have donkey showers under a big Boab tree, it was the best shower of my life! They also have a rustic camp kitchen with hot and cold water.

They have a small gorge on the property which we explored with a great family we met. The Homestead itself is an oasis, they sell coffee and scones along with there famous mango smoothie. A playground for the kids and plenty of room for them to run around. Lowana made great friends here, In fact so did we. We were lucky enough to be invited to the station owners house for a play and drinks. Ellenbrae station we loved you!

We were then on our last leg of this iconic road and we headed for the Pentecost river. A crossing that is rather famous and has been on the bucket list for quiet some time. The scenery to get here was extraordinary driving towards the cockburn ranges you had jaw dropping views.

We spent 2 nights at a free camp looking onto the cockburn ranges. We were lucky enough to have the place to ourselves the first night however not the second. We did some fishing down at the river but Lyndon only caught a tiny Barra. Didn’t see any crocs whilst we were there however they have been spotted. It was honestly the best way to finish off 3 fantastic weeks seeing the Gibb River Road, dusty , dirty feet , rock climbs and the many waterfalls we would do it all again in a heart beat.

wow looks fantastic you are sure ticking off a lot of m wish list one day. 🙂
